Sounds of Superior Chorus

In 1973, a group of women from all walks of life met with a common bond of "liking to sing". Under the direction of Barbara Dunn, the journey began to learn the barbershop style of singing and the Thunder Bay Chapter of Sweet Adelines was established. The chorus grew with different directors stepping in over the years - Jo Carter, Mitzi Marshall, Diane Crocker, Ries Beerthuizen and Jackie Knowles.

In 1999 the name of the chorus was officially changed to the Sounds of Superior Chorus.

The first Sweet Adelines Regional Competition the chorus entered was in Duluth in 1978 with twenty-three chorus members performing under the direction of Mitzi Marshall. The chorus was excited to receive their first - 5th place medal in 1999 under the direction of Wendy McFayden and our first - 3rd place medal in 2008 under the direction of Jackie Knowles. The chorus will continue to participate in Regional Competitions and well as the local Festival of Music and the Arts.

Support of our local community is very important and the Chorus has donated to several charities over the years including the Food Bank, Cancer Society, ALS, Salvation Army, Shelter House and many others. The Chorus has also supported the music program at the Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute.

In addition to the chorus, many quartets have been formed over the years with three of the quartets competing in Regional Competitions, Short 'n' Sweet, Dynamic Difference and Signature 4 - with Dynamic Difference winning Novice Quartet.
    In
October 2016, Jason Scriver accepted the position of Director and the challenge to learn the barbershop sstyle of singing and performance. After only a few short weeks he directed his first chorus show.

The Sounds of Superior Chorus has enjoyed over 40 years of barbershop harmony and look forward to continuing our Sweet Adeline journey for another 40 years.
